Memphis has many museums and historical sites of interest. Museums in Memphis include the National Civil Rights Museum, Graceland, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, The Dixon Gallery, The Childerns Museum, The Pink Palace museum, Fire Museum, Slave Haven, Memphis Belle, Stax Museum, Sun Studio and many other museums. 

  • Brooks Museum of Art - The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art was founded in 1916. It is Memphis' premire art museum. The Brooks Museum of Art is located in midtown in Overton Park next to the Memphis College of Art, which also contains a display of student artwork.The musuem features many popular exhibits during the year and hosts apermanent collection of paintings including Italian Renaissance, Baroque, as well as British, French Impressionists, and 20th century artists. The musuem has audio guides, a cafe and gift shop.
  • Childrens Museum Of Memphis - The Children's Museum of Memphis creates learning experiences through hands-on exhibits and programs. The museum features many interactive exhibits for children, an art gallery and hosts events for groups and birthdays.
  • Chucalissa Museum and Archaeological site - American Indians lived in a sophisticated culture along the Mississippi River and in the Memphis area long before Europeans arrived to America. Chucalissa Museum allows visitors to explore Native American history and the lifestyle of these people. Chucalissa Museum is operated by the University of Memphis.
  •  Davies Manor Plantation - Placed on the National Register of Historic Places the Davies Manor Plantation is a two story log home that perserves the lives and hardships of early pioneers.
  • Dixon Gallery and Gardens - The Dixon Gallery and Gardens is one of Memphis' premier art museums. Founded in 1976, The Dixon Gallery specializes in impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. Includes four outdoor gardens with Greco-Roman sculpture and works by Monet, Degas and Renoir.
  • Fire Museum of Memphis - Located downtown in a turn-of-the-century firehouse named Fire Engine House No. 1. Interactive fire museum. Fight burning flames or plan escape routes and feel the heat inf the Fire Room. Learn about the history of worst fires in Memphis. The Fire Museum of Memphis is America's premier fire museum with interactive fire safety exhibits and antique apparatus from the Memphis Fire Department.
  • Graceland - Graceland is the former home of Rock n Roll legend Elvis Presley. Graceland attracts over 650.000 visitors a year from Elvis fans who live all over the world. Guided tours of the home, Elvis' cars and plane and lots of Elvis Presley memorabilia. Annual events include the memorial services on the week of Elvis's birthday and the Graceland Christmas lighting.
  • Memphis Belle - Dedicated to honoring the history of the Memphis Belle a B-17 aircraft flown in combat missions during WWII and her crew.
  • Memphis Cotton Museum - Located on the floor of the historic Memphis Cotton Exchange the musuem shares the story of the cotton industry and preserves the history of the cotton business in Memphis.  The Memphis Cotton Museum offer interpretive exhibits and educational programs.
  • Memphis Rock and Soul Museum - Created by the Smithsonian Institution, The Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum is about the birth of rock and soul music. Located on historic Beale Street (at 191 Beale) the musuem tells the story of Memphis music and those who created it. Digital audio tour guides and a gift store.
  • Mud Island : Mississippi River Museum - Mud Island Mississippi River Park and Museum is located on Mud Island in downtown Memphis. It includes an actual-sized replica and facts on the Mississippi River. The Park is noted for its River Walk, a model showing 1,000 miles of the Lower Mississippi River, from Cairo, Illinois to New Orleans, Louisiana. The Walk stretches about 0.5 miles, allowing visitors to walk in the water and see models of cities and bridges along the way. Mud Island River Park offers canoe, kayak and bike rentals, pedal boats, gift shop and seasonal concerts. Ride the monorail to the park. 18 galleries, historical exhibits and learn about the history of teh Mississippi River.
  • National Ornamental Metal Museum - The National Ornamental Metal Museum is dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of fine metalwork. The musuem is located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The museum includes historic buildings, a working blacksmith shop and foundry, and a sculpture garden. During October, the Museum hosts an annual Repair Days Weekend - broken metal items can be fixed for the public by skilled metalsmiths.
  • National Civil Rights Museum - The National Civil Rights Museum is located in the former Lorraine Motel the site where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. The museum serves to preserve the legacy of Dr. King and the history of the American civil rights movement. The motel’s owner maintained the two rooms – Rooms 306 & 307 - used by Dr. King in the hours before his death as a shrine to him. A parade and celebration is held each year to honor Dr. King's memory on Martin Luther King Day. The museum presens a timeline of the civil rights struggles of the 1950's and 1960's. Exhibits include Montgomery Bus boycott, Brown vs Board of Topeka, Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike, Freedom Movement and other exhibits. An average of 200,000 people visit the museum each year. The National Civil Righst Museum in Memphis honors the past and celebrates the future. A must see for anyone visiting Memphis.
  • Pink Palace Muesum, Planetarium and IMAX - The Pink Palace Museum is Memphis' largest science museum. Walk through a replica of Piggly Wiggly the first self-service grocery store in the country. Trace the history of Memphis from Spanish explorers to the civil war. It includes America's third largest planetarium, as well as an IMAX theatre.
  • Slave Haven Burkle Estate Musuem -  Address: 826 N Second St Memphis, TN 38107, phone: 901-527-3427. Slave Haven is the former home of the Burkle family. Tthe home was a stop on the underground railroad in Memphis. This museum includes information regarding details on slave trade, runaway slaves and message systems and travel for slaves to escape using the underground railroad. 
  • Stax Museum of American Soul Music- the Stax Museum of American Soul Music has a broad collection of music, artifacts, photographs and exhibits. Along with the legendary Stax Sound, the museum also spotlights the music of Muscle Shoals, Motown, Hi and Atlantic.
  • Sun Studio - The birthplace of Rock N Roll. The original studio where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and other artists recorded their first songs and hits. Sun Studio is open every day with guided tours every hour.
  • Woodruff-Fontaine House - A French Victorian mansion built in 1870 along “Millionaires Row" in Memphis. Narrated tours, weddings, receptions and birthday parties are available. Address: 680 Adams Ave, Memphis, TN , phone: 901 526 1469.
